Acceptable usage is defined as those activities ordinarily associated with the usage of the Internet, including but not limited to use of Crusoes systems and network facilities for accessing the World Wide Web, E-Mail, Chat, News, and other Internet services. Some Subscribers may store files on Crusoes servers for personal web page, file access area (FTP), or Unix utilities. Shell users may be permitted to use their own software on Crusoe's servers, subject to Crusoes inspection and approval, provided such software does not use excessive system resources or in any way compromise system integrity and does not fall under any of the prohibited activities listed within this document.
The following activities are specifically banned by Crusoe to protect system integrity and availability. These rules apply to all Subscribers, unless specifically allowed by the service purchased. Subscribers violating these rules may result in immediate account termination. This is not a comprehensive list. Crusoe reserves the right to change or expand this list at any time without notice.
1. Bulk Mailing (Spam)
Crusoe Communications does not allow any form of bulk mailing by its customers.
Bulk Mail, commonly known as Spam, UCE or UBE, causes enormous problems for
system administrators across the Internet. The ban on Bulk Mail is not
limited to Crusoe's Mail Servers. Any attempt by Subscribers to send Bulk
mail by Relay or "Hijacking" any other mail server will result in
immediate termination. It is Crusoe's policy to cooperate fully in the
prosecution of illegal mail relaying.
2. Harassment
No Subscriber may use Crusoe systems to harass or threaten any other subscribers
or users of the Internet.
3. News (USENET) Abuse
Similar to Bulk Mailing, News Abuse includes forging of addresses, harassment
or threats, the posting of the same message to multiple news groups (spamming),
as well as the posting of information in groups where it is not relevant and
unwanted.
4. Background Applications/Servers
Shell or Dial-up users may only utilize Crusoe system resources while online.
No background processes, including but not limited to, IRC servers, HTTP servers,
Bots, or offline compilers are permitted.
5. Flooding or Abuse of Other Users
Flooding is a fairly common occurrence on the Internet, and one which is dealt
with strictly at Crusoe. Flooding takes place in numerous ways, including but
not limited to ICMP flooding, mail bombing (sending large amounts of e-mail
repeatedly to a person for purposes of harassment), mass mailings to multiple
addressees, msg/CTCP flooding on IRC, as well as other, less common methods.
6. Attempts to compromise system and/or network security
Programs such as packet sniffers, password crack programs, and similar utilities
found to be running from a users account are prohibited. This also includes
attempts to hack into non-Crusoe systems.
7. Sharing of Accounts
Sharing of a users account with another party for purposes of avoiding
payment for a second account is strictly prohibited.
8. Attempts to Bypass Resource Usage Limitations
In order to provide fair service to all Crusoe users, Crusoe has implemented
certain resource limitations; the two most common are disk quotas on the servers,
and idle time-outs on dial-ups. Attempts to bypass disk usage quotas by any
means may result in immediate loss of system privileges. Attempts to bypass
the idle time-outs are also prohibited. The current idle time-out limit is 15
minutes.
9. Excessive Use of System Resources
This segment can be broken down into two different parts, system and dial-up.
For system purposes, this can be defined as the continued use of programs or
commands which use a large amount of system resources -- processor time, network
bandwidth, and/or drive space -- on the host system. For dial-up purposes, this
primarily prohibits the continued usage of a dial-up port to simulate a dedicated
connection for the users system. Dial-up accounts are designed to provide
on-demand access for Subscribers, not dedicated connections. If a dedicated
connection is desired, the Subscriber needs to speak with Crusoe's Sales department.
The preceding guidelines are an addendum to the Terms and Conditions defined for each of Crusoe's services. In the event of a contradiction between the Terms and Conditions and the Acceptable Use Policy, the Terms and Conditions will be considered to be the final authority.
